What Is the Difference Between a Website and a Landing Page?

By Riley Kennedy · Riley Tech Studio

If you've been looking into getting an online presence for your business, chances are you've heard both terms thrown around. Website. Landing page. They sound similar, and in some ways they are — but they serve very different purposes, and choosing the wrong one for your situation can mean wasted money and missed opportunities.

Here's a plain English breakdown of the difference, and how to know which one your business actually needs.

What Is a Website?

A website is a full online presence for your business. It typically has multiple pages — a homepage, an about page, a services page, a portfolio or gallery, a contact page — and it's designed to give visitors a complete picture of who you are, what you do, and why they should choose you.

A website works well when:

  • You offer multiple services or products
  • You want to build long-term trust and authority with potential customers
  • You're investing in SEO and want Google to rank you for multiple search terms
  • You want somewhere to send people from your social media, business cards, and word of mouth referrals
  • You plan to grow your online presence over time with blog posts, case studies, or new pages

A good example of this is Inclusive Transport, a client we worked with recently. Their business serves a specific but important purpose — transport for people who need it most — and they needed a full multi-page website that could clearly communicate their services, build trust with families and carers making important decisions, and represent their brand professionally online. Beni Brown, the owner, put it well:

"Riley was outstanding to work with. Communication was quick and easy from start to finish, and he delivered everything promptly as promised to a very high standard. He has a great eye for creativity and really brought my vision to life. Highly recommend his services to anyone looking for a professional, efficient website build."

What Is a Landing Page?

A landing page is a single, focused page with one goal — to get the visitor to take a specific action. That action might be filling out a contact form, making an enquiry, booking a call, or signing up for something.

Unlike a full website, a landing page has no navigation menu, no about section, no blog. Everything on the page is designed to keep the visitor focused and move them toward that one action. There are no distractions, no rabbit holes to click into.

Landing pages work well when:

  • You're running a Google Ads or social media campaign and need a focused destination
  • You have one core service and one core audience
  • You're a sole trader or small operation that doesn't need a complex web presence
  • You want to get online quickly and affordably
  • You want to test whether there's demand for a service before investing in a full site

A great example of this is Zampa Services, another client we worked with. They needed a clean, professional online presence that clearly represented their business and made it easy for potential customers to get in touch — without the complexity or cost of a full multi-page website. Leanne Zampa said:

"Working with Riley was a fantastic experience from start to finish. He took my ideas and turned them into a professional, polished website that truly represents my business. The whole process was smooth and stress-free. Highly recommend!"

The Key Differences at a Glance

Purpose A website builds your full brand and authority over time. A landing page converts a specific visitor into a lead right now.

Structure A website has multiple pages and navigation. A landing page is a single page with no navigation — just a clear message and a call to action.

SEO A website gives you far more opportunity to rank on Google across multiple search terms and topics. A landing page can rank for one or two specific searches but has limited SEO reach.

Cost and timeline A landing page is quicker and more affordable to build. A full website takes more time and investment but delivers more long-term value.

Best for Landing pages suit sole traders, campaign-specific promotions, and businesses just getting started online. Full websites suit businesses with multiple services, growth ambitions, and a long-term digital strategy.

Which One Do You Need?

The honest answer depends on your situation.

If you're a tradie or sole trader with one core service, you're just getting online for the first time, or you're testing a new offer — a landing page is a smart, cost-effective starting point. You can always expand into a full website later as your business grows.

If you have multiple services, you're serious about ranking on Google, or you want a digital presence that grows with your business over the next few years — a full website is the right investment.

And sometimes the answer is both — a full website as your main presence, with dedicated landing pages built for specific campaigns or services.

Not sure which one is right for you? That's exactly the kind of conversation we have with clients before we start any project.
